MILK COOLING TANKS

Bulk Milk Coolers for dairies of all sizes.

Since milk leaves the udder at approximately 35°C and retains a natural resistance to bacteria after extraction, the extracted milk needs to be cooled to around 4°C to avoid or reduce any bacterial growth. To achieve this purpose, a bulk milk cooling tank or bulk milk cooler (BMC) is used by milk co-operative societies and large dairy farms to cooling and hold the milk at a cold temperature of 4°C until it can be picked up by a milk tanker.

There are two important following aspects of a BMC to be considered before going for the one that suits your requirement.

1) Shape and Capacity of the tank

Depending on the amount of milk to be cooled, BMCs come in various shapes and sizes. For milk from 500L to 2000L, horizontal semi-cylindrical BMCs can be used. Also, for small capacities of 200L to 1000L, vertical cylindrical BMCs can be used. For capacities of 2000L to 5000L, horizontal closed cylindrical BMCs are used.

2) Refrigeration Unit Sizing

The most commonly used method to cool the milk in a BMC is the direct expansion (DX) method. In the direct expansion (DX) type, the refrigerant system directly extracts the heat via evaporator (Dimpled Jacket) which is a part of the bottom side of the cooling tank. The tank is insulated to maintain the temperature and is provided with an agitator for uniform distribution and cooling of milk. To ensure efficient and fast cooling of the milk, a properly designed refrigeration unit with an adequate capacity has to be used.

Our bulk milk coolers conform to ISO 5708 standard which ensures a cooling from 35°C to 4°C within 2.5 hours for the first milking with the tank filled up to 50% of its rated capacity and not more than 1.5 hours for the second milking.

Features:

1) High quality & Environment-friendly

The inner and outer shells of all our tanks are made of stainless steel (AISI304-grade) of adequate thickness with a high-density insulation material (CFC-free PUF) stuffed in between the two shells.

2) No creaming while cooling

An agitator for continuous agitation of milk to avoid creaming is also used.

3) Complete milk drain

The tank also has a smooth slope which ensures drainage up to the last drop of milk. 4) Efficient cooling

The refrigeration unit consists of an adequately sized compressor and a condensing unit to ensure trouble-free and efficient operation. An easy to operate temperature indicator and controller is mounted on the control panel to gauge and maintain the temperature of the milk in the tank. Also, at low levels within the tank, the refrigeration unit provides cooling without any formation of ice. For large cooling tanks (>= 2000L), we can also provide a dual compressor/condensing unit to make sure the cooling system keeps on running all the time.

5) Easy cleaning

The tanks have a generously sized lid opening which provides easy access to the tank which facilitates proper cleaning of the tank. Closed type bulk milk coolers come with a ladder and a manhole for human access.
